(2008): Directed by
Jia Zhangke, the story follows three generations of characters in
the city of Chengdu.
Told in pseudo-documentary style, the film revolves around the closing
of a state-run military factory to be replaced by luxury apartments
with various characters telling stories involving changes that have
taken place (the
Great Leap
Forward, the
Cultural
Revolution, etc.). The film’s soundtrack also gives somewhat of a
chronological history of Chinese pop culture.
