Land Area 3.79 million sq. miles 3.71 million sq. miles
Population (mid 2009) 307 million 1.34 billion
Labor Force 155 million 808 million

Gross Domestic Product (GDP) - 2008 $14.3 trillion $7.8 trillion
GDP Growth Rate (2008) 1.3% 9.8%
Public Debt 61% 15.7%
Export Value $1.38 trillion $1.47 trillion
Import Value $2.2 trillion $1.16 trillion

Internet Subscribers 227 million 338 million (mid 2009)
Cellphone Subscribers 260 million 601 million (2008)
What does this indicate?
  • U.S. still by far the biggest economy, but China is 2nd & growing at much higher rate
  • Income per capita much greater in U.S. & will remain so for long time (even though China's growth rate much greater, also much higher population)
  • China has high positive balance of trade & low debt; U.S. very low balance of trade & very high debt.
  • China has more Internet users & much more cell phone users, but still much greater growth potential than U.S.

U.S. economy, although very large, is in serious trouble (very low growth, very high debt, poor balance of trade).

Chinese economy is in good shape (high annual growth, low debt, good balance of trade) and still has great growth potential.

China will exert greater influence - We'll need to start thinking less about us and more about them.
