Offense, William P. Alford (Stanford University Press, 1995)
- excellent book discussing IP piracy from the Chinese as well
as Western perspective. Fairly easy to read. |
| The Politics of Piracy:
Intellectual Property in Contemporary China, Andrew C.
Mertha (Cornell University Press, 2005) - comprehensive analysis
of the problems in enforcing intellectual property rights in
China. Provides detailed explanation of the Chinese legal
enforcement system and U.S. pressure on China to improve
intellectual property protection. Fairly complex reading. |
| Framing Piracy: Globalization
& Film Distribution in Greater China,
Shujen Wang (Rowan & Littlefield Publishers, 2003) - discusses
piracy of movies in China & includes lots of data on lost
revenues, etc. |

Doing Business in China, Deli Yang (Elsevier Science Ltd.,
2003) - overview of the IP system in China; focuses on Chinese
legal system and enforcement problems. Fairly complex reading. |

2004) - Uses case studies to illustrate how IP can benefit

(Harper Business, 2004) - An American's story of doing business
in China and the differences between the U.S. and Chinese
business and social cultures. |
| Asian Eclipse: Exposing the
Dark Side of Doing Business in Asia, Michael Backman (John
Wiley & Sons, 2001) - Focuses on the risks & challenges of doing
business in various Asian countries including China. Discusses
problems of guanxi (connections), corruption & piracy. |
| A Traveller's History of
China, Stephen G. Haw (Interlink Books, 2003) - From
prehistoric beginnings over 4000 years ago to the dramatic
changes of the 1900s and China's emergence as an economic
superpower at the beginning of the 21st century. |
| A Short History of Asia,
Colin Mason (Palgrave, 2000) - Very readable overview of history
from the Stone Age to the present. Includes chapters on China. |
| The Legal System of the
People's Republic of China in a Nutshell, Daniel C.K. Chow
(West 2003) - Covers the structure of the Chinese government,
the legal system, human rights, and main areas of law, focusing
on foreign investment and intellectual property. |
| China's Long March Toward
Rule of Law, Randall Peerenboom (Cambridge University Press,
2002) - Examines the transition of China's legal system to a
semi-democratic system. |
| I also recommend novels by James
Clavell which, although novels, provide very vivid and largely
accurate portrayal of Hong Kong (Taipan & Noble House)
and Japan (Shogun). |
