The Politics of Piracy: Intellectual Property in Contemporary China, Andrew C. Mertha (Cornell University Press, 2005) - comprehensive analysis of the problems in enforcing intellectual property rights in China. Provides detailed explanation of the Chinese legal enforcement system and U.S. pressure on China to improve intellectual property protection. Fairly complex reading.

Intellectual Property and Doing Business in China, Deli Yang (Elsevier Science Ltd., 2003) - overview of the IP system in China; focuses on Chinese legal system and enforcement problems. Fairly complex reading.
WTO, Internationalization & The Intellectual Property Rights Regime in China, Kong Qingjiang (Marshall Cavendish International, 2005) - discusses China’s IP development in connection with its obligations under World Trade Organization treaties. Fairly complex reading.
Poor People’s Knowledge: Promoting Intellectual Property in Developing Countries, J. Michael Finger & Philip Schuler, eds. (Oxford University Press, 2004) - Uses case studies to illustrate how IP can benefit developing countries.

Non-Intellectual Property Books
China, Inc.: How the Rise of the Next Superpower Challenges America and the World, Ted C. Fishman (Scriber, 2005) - discusses China’s rapid rise as a world superpower; Has a chapters on piracy and "The China Price." Very readable.
Mr. China, Tim Clissold (Harper Business, 2004) - An American's story of doing business in China and the differences between the U.S. and Chinese business and social cultures.
Asian Eclipse: Exposing the Dark Side of Doing Business in Asia, Michael Backman (John Wiley & Sons, 2001) - Focuses on the risks & challenges of doing business in various Asian countries including China. Discusses problems of guanxi (connections), corruption & piracy.
A Traveller's History of China, Stephen G. Haw (Interlink Books, 2003) - From prehistoric beginnings over 4000 years ago to the dramatic changes of the 1900s and China's emergence as an economic superpower at the beginning of the 21st century.
A Short History of Asia, Colin Mason (Palgrave, 2000) - Very readable overview of history from the Stone Age to the present. Includes chapters on China.
The Legal System of the People's Republic of China in a Nutshell, Daniel C.K. Chow (West 2003) - Covers the structure of the Chinese government, the legal system, human rights, and main areas of law, focusing on foreign investment and intellectual property.
